Story-Time at the Smart Working Revolution
It’s Story-Time again at The Smart Working Revolution! Here’s one from our CEO, Ruth.
Once upon a time, there was a Heatwave. It was 1976 and I worked for Aitons, the Pipe Makers, in Derbyshire as a switchboard and telex operator. My first job.
One day, it was so hot that I wore a pretty blue check gingham sun dress to work. My supervisor took one look at me and said, “You shouldn’t be wearing a sundress to work. Mr. Boissier will not like it!” Mr. Boissier was the Big Boss.
Lunchtime came, and I went to meet a friend on the Racecourse – we’d eat our packed lunch and catch a glimpse of Derbyshire playing cricket through the trees.
I reached the front door. Well, you can guess who was walking in. That’s right – Mr. Boissier.
Oh no, I thought, I’m in for it now! But he held the door wide, sort of bowed low, and said, “You look lovely today, Ruth.”
Later, when I was having my Tea (that’s a Midlands term for Dinner), I told Mum the story.
She laughed, ‘You do look lovely in that dress and I suspect your supervisor was just a little bit jealous. And remember that when you are older, if you happen to manage others.”
And I have remembered that Mum – but I wish I was back in 1976 in that little gingham sun dress. I also wish I’d started banging the smart working drum earlier. This weather is amazing – but also scary. A combined effort of UK business would reduce our carbon footprint and the problems we continue to cause for future generations – our children and grandchildren.
How can Thoughtful Leaders reduce Carbon Emissions to Protect Young People, Future Generations and Nature?
Here are some facts from Nasa.
1. The planet’s average surface temperature has risen 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century.
2. The change is driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.
3. Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years – that’s 6 years after my Sundress Story – so we didn’t learn anything from that hot summer.
4. The five warmest years on record have been since 2010 with 2016 the warmest year on record.
5. June 2018 tied for the 3rd warmest June on record.
Thoughtful Leaders – dust off your corporate social responsibility hats – ask your team to do some smart thinking about how we can help to reduce the carbon footprint of this lovely little island. Here’s a starter for 10!
Smart working options will help reduce congestion and carbon emissions.
Let’s do something about it!
