Story-Time at the Smart Working Revolution
It’s Story-Time again at The Smart Working Revolution! Here’s one from our CEO, Ruth.
Once upon a time, there was a Heatwave. It was 1976 and I worked for Aitons, the Pipe Makers, in Derbyshire as a switchboard and telex operator. My first job.
One day, it was so hot that I wore a pretty blue check gingham sun dress to work. My supervisor took one look at me and said, “You shouldn’t be wearing a sundress to work. Mr. Boissier will not like it!” Mr. Boissier was the Big Boss.
Lunchtime came, and I went to meet a friend on the Racecourse – we’d eat our packed lunch and catch a glimpse of Derbyshire playing cricket through the trees. I reached the front door. Well, you can guess who was walking in. That’s right – Mr. Boissier.
Oh no, I thought, I’m in for it now! But he held the door wide, sort of bowed low, and said, “You look lovely today, Ruth.”
Later, when I was having my Tea (that’s a Midlands term for Dinner), I told Mum the story.
She laughed, ‘You do look lovely in that dress and I suspect your supervisor was just a little bit jealous. And remember that when you are older, if you happen to manage others.”
I have remembered that Mum and I encourage my beautiful team (male and female) to dress as they feel comfy!
